Here's the original shaft


After I knocked the old u-joints out of it and separated the two halves, I gave it a quick cleaning and a trip through the sandblast cabinet.

Much better, I hate working on dirty, greasy stuff.

Next I chucked it up in the lathe to cut the yoke off.

I've done this before without the lathe, but its much easier and more precise this way.

Here's the yoke, cut off.


Now I chuck the yoke and turn off the weld, and whats left of the old tube.


After I shorten the tube the right amount, I slip the freshly turned yoke into the tube and weld it up. I even ground down the weld to make it pretty... and to destroy any evidence of my crappy welds!


Here it is, all back together.


Now I just need to spray a little paint on it to keep it from rusting...Hmm what color should I use?


Jason, I'll pick up some new u-joints tomorrow and get them put in. I'll bring it to the meeting with me on Saturday. You're just going to have to wonder about the color until then. ]]>

Hmmmm, Looks a little icy...But i've got snow tires and AWD, should be no problem.



Oops. A little slicker than I expected. After about a half hour of spinning around, sliding down the hill backwards, sideways, frontways and every other way, I gave it up and backed down. Damn defeated again!

Oh well, there was still other roads to check out.



This one looked promising.





Damn, more of the same problems as the other road. That was enough for me, I headed home with my head hung in shame.

I'm going to have to go back with the Jeep now to conquer these roads.

I wonder if anyone makes lockers and a lift kit for a Subaru.]]>
